Bakker, Swaggart and Roberts
Do you remember when preachers Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggert and Oral Roberts began to accuse each other of NOT teaching the truth? That whole episode proved something about the idea of “modern-day revelations.”
All three men claim modern-day revelations; that God speaks to them. Now, you will remember how Bakker blamed Swaggart for leading a “plot” to discredit him within their own denominational circles; and, how Swaggart said Bakker was wrong about his revelation to build a theme park and Roberts was wrong about his claim that God would “take him home” (kill him) unless Roberts raised $8 million for his hospital. Roberts answered that Swaggart had been taken over by demons. But then, Bakker went to jail for fraud, Roberts sold the hospital, and Swaggart… Well, the Bible says, “it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret” (Ephesians 5:12).
Now, all of that should raise a few questions. Since God is “not the author of confusion” (1 Corinthians 14:33), which of the three conflicting “revelations” is from God? Did God order a theme park? A hospital? And $8 million or else? To which of three men did God speak, and thus, in turn spoke God’s words against the others? For believers in modern-day revelations these questions are troubling and perplexing.
That God has in times past spoken to men who have recorded His will is evident (2 Peter 1:20-21). That God designed this process to be completed through the apostles of Christ, and therefore, no longer necessary after their deaths is also evident (John 16:13-15). That the apostles also understood this to be the case is also evident (Ephesians 3:1-5; 1 Corinthians 4:6; Galatians 1:6-9). Hence, there are no modern-day revelations from God. All that man needs for salvation and service God revealed in His book, the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16-17). And so, we are not at the mercy of those who claim revelations from God today (1 John 4:1,6).
If modern-day revelations are claimed where you worship, then ASK YOUR PREACHER to tell you how he knows God did or did not speak to Bakker, Roberts or Swaggart.
