Ask Your Preacher

Baptism: For the Saved or the Lost?

To my knowledge, no preacher denies that baptism is a command of the Lord to be obeyed. But there is much disagreement as to WHO needs to obey it.

MOST preachers teach it is a command for the SAVED to obey, while a few (like myself) teach it is a command for the LOST. Which is it? Is baptism for the saved or the lost? This would be an excellent question to ASK YOUR PREACHER.

I believe the answer resides in understanding what the Bible says baptism is for and does:

1) Baptism is FOR SALVATION because Jesus said, “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved” (Mk. 16:16). Also, Peter wrote that “baptism now saves you” (1 Pet. 3:21).

2) Baptism is FOR FORGIVENESS OF SINS because Peter preached: “Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins” (Acts 2:38).

3) Baptism PUTS ONE INTO CHRIST (Gal. 3:27) where ALL spiritual blessings reside (Eph. 1:3) such as redemption (Eph. 1:7), forgiveness (Col. 1:14), grace (2 Tim. 2:1) and the promise of eternal life (2 Tim. 1:1).

In view of all that the Bible says is accomplished in baptism, two things should be obvious: (1) Baptism is a command the LOST need to obey; and (2) preachers who teach baptism is a command the SAVED need to obey are NOT teaching Bible baptism.”
