Ask Your Preacher

Must Christians Tithe?

Preachers are charged with “handling accurately the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). Unfortunately, many don’t when they bind upon people the “regulations of divine worship” contained in the “first covenant” (Hebrews 9:1). For example…

ASK YOUR PREACHER where Christians are told to tithe (give 10%) to the Lord. Surely your preacher will know the passage if he is teaching this to you and other members of your church. Have your preacher put the scripture here ____________________.

I don’t know of a scripture that tells CHRISTIANS to tithe. Therefore, I don’t preach it to anyone. Now if you and I were Israelites still under the Law of Moses – that first covenant – it would be different (see Deuteronomy 12:1,11)… Your preacher didn’t give you an Old Testament passage to put in the blank above, did he? If so, ask about his “burnt offerings, sacrifices,” etc. (Deut. 12:11).

I tell Christians that they should give “as prospered” (1 Corinthians 16:2), as they have “purposed in their heart, not of necessity, but willingly and cheerfully” (2 Corinthians 9:7), and “according to their ability” (Acts 11:29). That’s not mandatory percentage giving (tithing), is it? Is your preacher “handling accurately the word of truth” when he tells you and the church to tithe?
